Function

The Directorate Communications of the European Central Bank (ECB) is seeking applications from recent graduates or university students who are close to completing their studies to participate in a traineeship in its Press and Information Division for a period of at least six months.

The Press and Information Division is responsible for:

* maintaining working relations with the media and with the press offices of the national central banks, and for providing press information to the ECB;
* providing the public with information on the ECB/Eurosystem/European System of Central Banks;
* preparing and implementing internal communication policies at the ECB and developing internal communication instruments;
* organising visits to the ECB, mainly involving groups of visitors, ECB watchers and analysts, as well as the media;
* carrying out communication campaigns in Member States when they adopt the euro and issue new euro banknote series.

The traineeship aims to give successful applicants the opportunity to gain experience in communications and media relations.

While at the ECB, the trainee[s] will be expected to assist with a range of tasks, including:

* responding to enquiries from the media and members of the public;
* organising press conferences and other events;
* media monitoring;
* delivering presentations on the ECB’s tasks to visitor groups.

Successful applicants will be assigned a supervisor, but will be expected to work mainly on their own initiative.

Qualifications and experience

The traineeship is aimed at recent graduates or current students of communications, public relations, media studies, European and international affairs, economics, political science or related subject areas.

Applicants must have the following knowledge and competencies:

* A basic knowledge of economics and central banking issues would be an advantage.
* A thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office applications is required.
* A good knowledge of English and of at least one other official language of the EU is required. Knowledge of German and/or French would be an advantage.

The successful candidate will have the following behavioural competencies:

* the ability to manage his/her own workload independently;
* the ability to work efficiently with a sense of initiative and commitment;
* the ability to handle of sensitive information in a discreet and confidential manner.;
* an orientation towards analysis and delivering results;
* the ability to prioritise tasks and pay attention to detail, even when under time pressure;
* a strong team orientation and a willingness to actively cooperate with other staff members and management.

Duration of contract / Closing date

Traineeship for a minimum period of six months, with and if possible to be extended additional six months.
